Ariel’s central location, cool climate, and green parks make it an ideal home for many. With a population nearing the 25,000 mark and an additional 15,000 students at Ariel University, Ariel is a microcosm of Israeli society, blending diverse communities into a harmonious whole.

Demographics and Community

Ariel is home to a diverse population, including native Israelis, new immigrants, young families, pensioners, religious and secular residents. The city’s growth was significantly boosted in the 1990s with the arrival of over 7,000 new immigrants from the former Soviet Union, doubling Ariel’s population and leading to its declaration as a city in 1998 by Prime Minister Netanyahu. Today, about 40% of Ariel’s residents are former immigrants from the former Soviet Union. The city also welcomed families from Netzarim during the 2005 disengagement from Gaza, along with new families from North America and South Africa, further strengthening Ariel’s religious community.

Education

Education is a top priority in Ariel. The city boasts a comprehensive educational system, from day-care centers to high schools, and is home to the renowned Ariel University. With over 15,000 students, Ariel University reflects the full spectrum of Israeli society and offers a wide range of undergraduate programs, vocational training, and specialized courses in science and technology. In 2018, the University expanded its academic offerings by opening a medical school, becoming the 6th medical school in Israel.

Industry and Commerce

Ariel is a hub of industrial and commercial activity. The city’s western industrial area hosts over 120 diversified industries, spanning 850 square kilometers and housing more than 40 plants, factories and businesses in various sectors, including food, textiles, steel, and more. The park offers financial incentives, including low taxes and governmental assistance, attracting companies from across the country.

Leisure and Sports

Ariel is committed to promoting a healthy lifestyle. The city offers extensive sports and leisure facilities, including a large Sports and Recreation Complex, five gymnasiums, outdoor courts, fitness facilities, and more. Ariel is home to competitive soccer, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, and shooting teams, as well as dance groups and a vibrant music school.

Tourism

The ‘Eshel HaShomron’ Hotel, the only Israeli hotel in Samaria, is located at the entrance of Ariel, providing visitors with easy access to Samaria’s springs, historical sites, wineries, and more. The hotel features 98 rooms, a swimming pool, conference halls, and a unique Biblical Story Garden that brings the region’s history to life through educational and experiential exhibits.

Immigrant Absorption

Ariel has a rich history of welcoming new immigrants. In the 1990s, Ariel played a key role in integrating immigrants from the former Soviet Union, doubling its population. The city continues to be a destination for English-speaking immigrants from North America, South Africa, and England, offering programs and projects to help new residents feel welcomed and integrated into the community.
