On the night of Yom HaZikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day, hundreds gathered for the moving, outdoor ceremony honoring Israel’s fallen, with a special tribute to residents of Ariel who lost their lives fighting for Israel and in brutal terrorist attacks. Mayor Eli Shaviro and other city leaders addressed the audience, and Ariel’s young, talented singers told the story of Israel’s fight for her life through songs appropriate for the occasion.
Following the city-wide Yom HaZikaron ceremony, Asa-el Shabo, who lost his mother and three brothers in a terrorist attack, addressed the teenage boys at the Oraita Clubhouse. He spoke about his difficulties, rehabilitation, and, above all, of his will to continue on. His strength, persistence, and will to live inspired all. The next day, across all of Ariel’s schools, students held their own ceremonies, with IDF soldiers paying respects at their alma maters, as is tradition.
