Taking a closer look at the children of Ariel, we've discovered that all too often those who need the most have the least.
With the opening of the year 2010 the City of Ariel has over 900 children who receive direct care and assistance from our Department of Social Services. Amongst them, there are over 200 children who are considered "at risk". These "at risk" children cope with a multitude of challenges, both in and outside the home. From economic hardships to persona and family issues, these children require more than they're receiving. Unfortunately, even with a highly professional staff and a variety of programs, there's only so much the Department of Social Services can provide.
American Friends of Ariel has initiated a new fund for these children. The Ariel Children's Fund will provide financial assistance for the following:
• Therapy – clinical psychology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, art therapy, music therapy, family therapy, animal therapy etc. Funding will offset the cost of evaluations and therapy sessions, giving the children an opportunity to build a strong personal foundation and overcome their adverse circumstances.
• Enrichment Programs – a full range of extra-curricular programs at the local community center, at school or at kindergarten, depending on the interests and needs of the child. The enrichment programs will broaden the children's range of life experiences, cultivate their talents, empower them to succeed and open doors for future opportunities.
• Tutoring – many of these children require a conducive study setting with personal guidance and assistance, in order for them to keep up with their schoolwork. It's imperative that they be given an opportunity to stay in school and on track.
In order to address the comprehensive needs of these children, the allocation board will include professional representatives from the Ariel Department of Social Services and the Ariel Interdisciplinary Center.
The current international economic recession has created significant challenges for the needy in Israel. In addition to American Friends of Ariel's concurrent efforts to provide for the immediate needs of the economically weak, we need to focus on the future of the youth who are born into these challenging circumstances. By providing them with solutions today we invest in their tomorrow.
